You don’t need to go all the way to Oatman just to get your donkey fix. On April 12th, Munchkin stopped by the new Black Mountains Donkey Rescue, an Arizona 501 (c)(3) non-profit located in Golden Valley.
Their mission statement is: “To provide a safe place for any donkey placed in our care; attending to their every need; medical, emotional and physical, and seeking a permanent and loving forever home for them when or if the time is appropriate.”
All the donkeys currently in the care of Cheryl, Phil, and Margaret, started out their lives as wild donkeys and came to live at the sanctuary through various means.
The Black Mountains Donkey Rescue is open to the public and the donkeys can be visited by calling for an appointment, preferably 24 hours in advance. They only feed low calorie treats such as celery and do not accept donations of horse treats of any kind, as obesity can cause health problems in donkeys and they require a restricted diet. Arranging a donation of grass hay would be more appropriate.
